Ethimologically, the designation of Guitar comes from the greek vocable Kythara, wich later on, latin people converted into Cithara. A legend says that this name comes from Cyterón, the name of a mountain placed somewhere beetween Beócia and Atica. But there are those who, discording this opinion, defend that it dervies from Cythara, the ancient name of the greek island Cerigo, wich was considered as the paradise of poetry and love, and in wich existed a temple dedicated to Venus.

The guitar is one of the most dominant instruments in the realm of instrumental music covering tunes of light music, western, Indian or classical music. Its melody and extraordinary range of variations keep the people spell bound the world over. We Indians feel our senses purified and dance mesmerizingly at the tunes of the guitar. Most of the music exponents attribute the guitar as a western instrument but quite a few know that guitar was played in the ancient days in India during the Vedic period; the form of music was Samgan. The kachhapi veena was used in this period for solo performances and also as an accompanying instrument. This instrument later on is believed to have migrated to different parts of the world and acquired different names while it vanished from India. The kachhapi veena was one of the famous instruments of that period. The birth of the guitar can be linked to kachhapi veena which was used for Samgan (Geet) thus got its name as guitar. The mystery of the origin of the guitar probably is hidden in its name. The western name ‘guitar’ is derived from the syllogism. If we write guitar as Geetar, Geet + Tar means an instrument with tar or strings that can be played for any geet or song. The word ‘Geet’ is an Indian name for song in Sanskrit.

Guitars can be classified into 3 kinds: the classical guitar, the acoustic guitar and finally the electric guitar.

The classical guitar (also referred to as the Spanish guitar) is the most common between the three kinds of guitar. This kind of guitar has a hollow body with a hole that acts as a resonator of the sound produced by plucking and strumming the strings. It normally has six strings made of nylon. These nylon strings have less tension when compared to steel strings thus making this kind of guitar easy to pluck or strum. It is assumed that it is to be played only with a persons fingers and not with a pick. It is also normally used without amplifiers but classical guitar owners can equip one or just play the guitar in front of a microphone. This kind of guitar is used mainly for classical, Latin and Flamenco music.

Gibson Guitars has hooked up with Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong to create the Gibson Billie Joe Armstrong Signature model guitar, which will be available beginning in September for around $2,100. The design is based on Armstrong's beloved 1950s model Gibson Les Paul Jr. guitar. It will come in three colors; vintage sunburst, classic white and ebony. Included is a custom hard-shell case with leopard-print interior and Green Day's signature "Shock Guy" logo on the exterior.

Produced in a limited run of only 25 each, the new Copperhead SG and Crazy Horse Les Paul are available through Gibson Custom dealers. These guitars originally debuted on the August 9th episode of Trucks TV and because of the huge public response immediately following the program, Gibson Custom Division decided to issue a limited edition for 2003.
"Gibson's Les Paul and SG guitars knocked the music world off its rocker, just like the two trucks that inspired these two new Custom Shop guitars," said Gibson Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz. "Not only do they have attitude, they've got the power to back it up."
The Copperhead SG has a snakeskin finish with 3-D carved scales. The guitar is based on the 1967 Chevrolet Copperhead pickup, which has a 572 cubic-inch 640 horsepower crate engine from Chevy that hasn't even been made available to the general consumer yet.

It sounds nice, but it’s fairly polite and clean, and so far hasn’t grabbed me by the throat and yelled “Keep me!” However, it’s important to remember that an effect that sounds very distinctive and noticeable and cool will also usually grow old very very fast when you use it too much, and in some cases if the effect is dramatic enough, too much can equal “twice”. So we’ll see how this one fares through the recording process, how much it gets used, and what it gets used for before deciding whether or not to sell it on. Also important, just like using a synth, it can sometimes take a while to find an effect’s sweet spot. But, sometimes you never find a spot you like within its settings, so eventually you trade it for something else. The most important thing the FL9 will need to do to stay around is find some way to distinguish itself from the digital flanger models we have in the Kurzweil KSP8 and some of our plugins, because currently my impression is that it’s lacking the distinctive character necessary for me to go out of my way to use it.
